Freelance, project-specific

Location: London’s Boroughs of Hackney, Bexley, Newham, Havering and Greenwich

Reports to: Project Director and Managing Director PTC CIO

Purpose of the role
Paint the Change is seeking experienced freelance muralists to deliver large-scale public artworks as part of A Cleaner and Greener East London, a National Lottery Community Fund-supported campaign. You will work from a creative brief developed from community workshops by our Art Educator / Production Assistant, translating community voices on climate action into a high-quality, lasting public mural.

Key Responsibilities

Design

  • Develop mural concepts — including sketches, colour palettes, and scaled visuals — for approval by Paint the Change and the community partner prior to production, ensuring the design reflects the themes and priorities in the brief.

Production

  • Prepare surfaces and execute the agreed design to scale using appropriate materials and techniques.

  • Liaise with site managers and stakeholders to meet agreed specifications, timelines, and health and safety requirements.

  • Complete all finishing, sealing, and site clearance on conclusion.

  • Where feasible, involve community members in elements of the painting process.

Communications

  • Participate in interviews and filmed content documenting the mural's making.

  • Support the mural launch event where possible.

  • Acknowledge National Lottery funding in all public-facing materials, in line with Paint the Change's obligations to The National Lottery Community Fund.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience delivering murals or large-scale public artworks, with a portfolio of relevant work.

  • Ability to interpret a community-developed brief and produce a compelling, technically strong design.

  • Experience collaborating within multi-partner projects and responding to feedback constructively.

  • Sensitivity and respect when working across diverse cultures and communities.

  • Right to work in the UK, Enhanced DBS check, and familiarity with safeguarding practice.
